RagaChitra Classes RagaChitra offers Vocal & Veena classes. Classes are conducted for beginners and advanced level . Classes for Vocal Students at RagaChitra learn classical carnatic music in a methodical and interesting way. They learn kirtanas, bhajans, devotional songs, and slokas along with the basic lessons in carnatic music. They also learn and practice vocal exercises that strengthens and improves the tonal pitch of their voice and range. In addition they learn fundamental breathing exercises that help in breath control while singing. RagaChitra students also have many opportunities to perform in various programs and events at temples and cultural organizations. They also get an opportunity to become a member of the Chorus group and perform in RagaChitra’s productions. The opportunities to perform instill a confidence in them and motivate them to sing better. Students do not come to class because their parents dropped them off here but because they love to sing. The students, their parents and the listeners feel proud when they perform. RagaChitra's students are the torch bearers of our ancient music. An exclusive batch for children, provides for an opportunity to develop friendship and encourages team spirit. Chorus a new concept in carnatic music Chorus in carnatic music is a new concept. Students at RagaChitra are trained to sing in chorus as part of their lessons. They learn to sing to the accompaniment of other instruments. This also trains them to sing with rhythm and in proper tune and pitch, striving to discipline them as a singer. It also builds a team spirit. While keeping the Indian culture and traditions alive we also imbibe some of the good aspects of western music thus making use of the best of both worlds. The children born and brought up in this country understand this approach much better and are able to appreciate our classical music with ease. Classes for Veena Veena is the ancient, traditional string instrument of south India, and considered to be a divine instrument. It is one of the three principal musical instruments mentioned in the vedic literature, the other two being the Flute a wind instrument and Mrindangam, a percussion instrument. It takes long years of learning, dedicated practice, devotion and passion to acquire even a reasonable skill to play the Veena. Playing the veena is considered equal to practicing yoga and meditation for peace and spiritual enlightment. The classical, traditional aspect of carnatic music is given utmost importance and students are taught to play with gamakas (ornamentation) that is unique to the veena. Students, on reaching a reasonable level of proficiency, get an opportunity to be a member of the RagaChitra Chorus Team. Queens, NY Weekday evenings(Mon thru Fri).
