The Carnatic Music Festival, a treat for music lovers, music teachers and students, is here again.
The Carnatic Music Festival is being organized to promote Carnatic Music, to give performing opportunities to young carnatic musicians, to encourage them and to recognize their talent, hardwork and dedication to continue the traditions of this ancient form of music.
Program
Carnatic Exhibition
The day-long exhibition will feature exhibits on various musical instruments, great music composers, musicians and the history of carnatic music. Music CDs, Tanpura CDs and music books will be available on sale at the exhibition.
Saxaphone Concert Prashant RadhaKrishnan (www.prasantmusic.com)
Prasant Radhakrishnan is a versatile saxophonist identified with both carnatic and jazz disciplines. He is the disciple of Padmasri Kadri Gopalnath. Prasant has also been greatly influenced by the Jazz tradition. As a musical mind trained in two traditions, Prasant recently founded Vidya, a group which is a true combination of carnatic music and Jazz. Vidya will be a liason between the jazz and Indian classical music world, and a vehicle to introduce these traditions to new listeners.
Violin Duet Concert Srikanth Mallajosyula & Pavani Mallajosyula
Sreekanth and Pavani Mallajosyula of Detroit have carved a niche for themselves as successful carnatic concert performers presenting melodious music in both violin and vocal rich in bhavam, clarity and classicism . Srikanth is the diciple and nephew of the acclaimed violinist Kum.A.Kanyakumari. Pavani is the disciple of Vidwan Sri.R.R.KesavaMurthy. Both Srikanth & Pavani have accompanied many senior carnatic musicians visiting the USA.
Ranjani Mala - Carnatic Ensemble Nivedita ShivRaj, Samyuktha ShivRaj, Janani Kannan, Akila Venkataraman & RagaChitra Choir
"Ranjani Mala" is a garland of Ranjanis. This concert features compositions on various Ranjani-suffixed ragas which are exotic, melodious and some of which are rare. The concert includes lead and chorus singers who will be accompanied by musicians on drums, mridangam, saxaphone and digitally recorded music.
Veena Concert Preetha Narayanaswamy
Preetha Narayanaswamy is a disciple of Smt.Kamala Aswathama (mother & guru of E.Gayathri). Preetha has performed in major sabhas in India and in the USA including Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana.
Vocal Concert S.Aravind
Aravind is a disciple of Smt.Padma Veeraraghavan, acclaimed carnatic vocalist. He has performed in music festival concerts in Chennai and in the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana in addition to various performances. He has won several music competitions.
Common Language of Music (Lecture-Demonstration) Rohini Ramanathan
Rohini Ramanathan will present a session of comparitive music, comparing different genres of music namely, carnatic, hindustani, jazz, western classical, etc.
Rohini Ramanathan is an Indian Classical singer who has performed in many prestigious venues in the US and India. She has performed with western classical musicians and jazz musicians. She was the faculty member of New School for Social Research University. She is also an essayist, columnist and a short-story writer.
Yoga and Music Stephanie Thankappan & Nivedita ShivRaj
Stephanie Thankappan presents a yoga session to the live accompaniment of meditation music on the veena.
Stephanie Thankappan has been practicing Yoga from childhood and has had a lifetime interest in gaining spiritual knowledge. She is the Honorary Secretary of the International Yoga Federation for the U.S.A. and North America, a member of the World Yoga Council, president of the U.S. & North American Yoga Federation. She is a member of the Parliament of Religions in Argentina. She teaches yoga in New York. (Yoga Bhavan)
Carnatic Christian Songs Tamil Christuva Kovil Choir
The members of the Tamil Christuva Kovil Choir will perform christian songs based on carnatic music in Tamil.
Bala Bhajan RagaChitra Students
The children of RagaChitra Foundation will perform bhajans and devotional songs of great composers like Purandaradasar, Muthuswamy Dikshithar, to the accompaniment of live and recorded music showcasing the devotional aspect of carnatic music.
Isai Kolam RagaChitra Students
Young girls and ladies will sing hyms from Thiruppavai and Thiruvembavai while colored kolams are being drawn recreating the spritual scene in the months of Margazhi in TamilNadu.
Accompanists
Jayanth Balasubramanian - Mridangam - He is a disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Shri T.K.Murthy. He has accompanied several senior carnatic musicians. He is a graded artiste of All India Radio.
Akshay AnanthaPadmanabhan - Mridangam - He is a disciple of the Ghatam Maestro Prof T.H.Sibhas Chandra. He has performed with his guru in the percussion ensemble concerts in addition to accomapanying visiting carnatic musicians from India and artistes based in the US.
Gopal Narasimhamurthy - Mridangam - Gopal is a young upcoming artiste who has accompanied artistes in concerts in the tri-state area and ha partiipated in several competitions and won prizes. Aside from playing the mridangam, Gopal plays the saxophone in his high school Wind ensemble.
Jim Sykes - Jim is a western drummer who is completing his doctoral program in ethnomusicology. He has also learnt traditional Sri Lankan drumming and will be soon in Sri Lanka researching on the traditional and folk styles of SriLankan drumming on a Fullbright scholarship.
